You’ve got to get comfortable with fear; nothing’s worth doing unless you’re a little bit scared. People call women the weaker sex. It’s a total cliche - a man in a powerful position is considered assertive, whereas a woman is a ‘bitch’. You have to stand up to that and be ready for things to be hard and for things to be serious.
If you’re into fashion, chances are you’ve heard the name Chelsea Leyland. No - she’s not a designer. She’s not an editor or a high profile stylist. Chelsea Leyland is the much sought-after DJ of the moment, who’s spinning at all the coolest fashion parties. From Fendi to Valentino and everywhere in between, Chelsea’s become one of the most requested DJs on the NY party scene. I recently caught up with Chelsea at PH-D in the Dream Downtown Hotel, as she played a killer set for PMc Magazine’s official launch.
Describe your personal style? I like to mix vintage with high end designer. My everyday style is punky. I love 90’s grungy style.
What’s your favorite accessory this season? With out a doubt, Dominic Jones jewelry.
You love experimenting with beauty. Your dip-dyed purple hair got rave reviews! Ever try a beauty experiment that went awry? I tried to dye my brows lighter once and they went orange. That was pretty bad.
You’ve become one of the most sought-after DJs in New York. How did you get started? I was recommending a friend to DJ for fashion gigs and thought, wait a second I should learn.
Who is your favorite new artist? Garry Clark Jr.
What advice do you have for those trying to break into the business? Develop your own style and try and stick with that. Being unique is important.
Leyland created this mid-season mix of dance-worthy tunes just for fans of Maybelline New York. Enjoy, my pretties! xx
